A Q&A with Pulp Factor's coordinator Nikki Lu
Q. Tell us about the Pulp Factor. What's the general idea?
A: To me, the Pulp Factor is an opportunity for playwrights to show the world their art. There are no creative restrictions! The general idea is to work your magic on paper and the Pulp Stage works theirs onto the stage!
Q. What do you look for when evaluating scripts for the Pulp Stage? What makes a writer a potential match for the Pulp Stage?
A: Dialogue. That's the first thing I look for. Is it authentic? Does it sound true to the character? Does it fit the context of the play? Does it sound natural and logical during the cold reading? Not only does the Pulp Stage specialize in dialogue-only scripts, but dialogue is such an important role in plays and storytelling! I don't look for perfect dialogue. Everyone could always benefit from some feedback. I look for progress and potential. Maybe this line of dialogue doesn't fit the context of the scene, but it's halfway there; so, let's work together!
Q: How are plays workshopped for Pulp Factor? How do you notice plays evolve while being workshopped?
A: The Pulp Stage has always done really well with workshopping creative work through table reads. Hearing your work out loud will never hurt you and this practice is especially important in plays. I've seen several plays, including my own, improve substantially after multiple tables reads. There's always a shift in either scene, tone, stakes or just overall cleanliness.
Q: How did you first come to the Pulp Stage?
A: I have VolunteerMatch to thank! I remember desperately looking for opportunities for writing and building my skills. I was young, only 17 at the time. I had nothing to bring to the table other than my passion. Yet, The Pulp Stage saw my potential and took a chance on me. I had the privilege of seeing my play go live with REAL actors, something I'd never thought I'd see as an emerging writer. I'm beyond grateful to the Pulp Stage for giving me a chance. A chance is all someone really needs to grow!
